We were greeted but then were made to wait for about 15 mins until one of the staff showed up with a mobile phone and put me on with the manager, who confirmed my reservation.
The on-site staff speak poor french at best, so don't count on getting a lot of info out of them. We were upset to learn of a 12pm curfew and the rooms ride a fine line between cramped and cozy, and you'll hear all the morning bustle starting at 7am.
This was our first stay at a Riad ever so I can't really compare, but I'd say we got what we paid for. Air-conditioning was greatly appreciated since we were staying in a room on the top floor which has been soaking up the sun all day long.
I was overcharged and I had to have breakfast outside in 5 degrees. Avoid!!! The location is in very bad region with horrible buildings around. Also it's not there where the maps shows.
a riad in the old medina. comfy clean and friendly
I'm kinda heatbroken writing this review. Definetely the strongest side of this place is staff (and I'm sorry guys!). People are reaaally lovely. Breakfasts are also nice (small and simple, everyday look the same and yet they are nice anyway) but pros end at this point.
Neighborhood scares away from the first minute. Unfortunately for us, the manager and the sake of this opinion we didn't get the room we've booked (rooms on the first floor are decent). The one we got was way smaller. TV and mini bar were supposed to make it up, but they didn't. I asked for a discount and for the replacement (great reaction here). Unfortunately we had to sleep for the 2/3 of our stay in the "upgraded" room and the second night in it was a nail to the coffin. We found out that there was a MOUSE in our room. Manager simply said that it's winter and it's looking for a food. I bet the mouse found plenty in the kitchen. After that our breakfast didn't taste so good anymore.
Besides there was problem with a hot water, either we had to wait for 15 minutes until it heated up, or there was no hot water at all.
Wi-fi doesn't work even if you stand next to the router which is on the top floor.
If anyone considers staying at this place I definetely advise you against picking a room of a "higher" standard. You'll just pay more for the very same service. There's an info on their booking site about the measurements of the rooms - make sure to check it and take the bigger ones.
Would I recommend this place in general? I wouldn't advise you against, because... let's be honest this is Marrakesh, you can't expect conditions as in Hilton. Probably every other Riad would provide similar service. If I had to choose again, I would definetely gave up on Medina and pick some hotel in the new city. But that's just me, I don't like rats, dirt and a horse piss.
I do not recommend staying at Riad Der Salam. The price was disproportionate to quality. We have booked 2 rooms that differed in quality significantly. The room on the roof was quite OKish, but very cramped. Second room, at the ground floor was really bad. The room had little light and was cramped, shabby, dirty, scratched and moldy. For the reasons mentioned above, we asked to change the room. We were promised a discount, which we have never received and another room the next day. The next day we got a room right next to previous one at the ground floor again. The room was cleaner but similarly shabby, the ceiling was moldy, and the mold fell directly onto our belongings. If you are staying on the ground floor, do not expect any privacy, the toilet in the bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a wall, which ends about a meter from the ceiling. Moths flew everywhere, so I recommend leaving the baggage away from home once you return. Unfortunately we've brought some moths home. However, the location is quite good, 15-20 minutes walk from Jamaâ El Fna Square. However, there were some youngsters around who shout at us lies like: “this road is closed don’t go there”, “it is forbidden to go this street”, “this is our private street” I simply recommend to ignore them, although it is quite intimidating.
