Mini market Hassan, sometimes called Bakal Hassan, is one of the earliest and best-known markets in the Ain Hayani neighborhood of Tangier (close to the Spanish Consulate and Immeuble San Francisco). The small market opened in the early 1960s, long before there was a Marjane, Carrefour or Acima. It is located in Immeuble Itesa, a somewhat historic apartment building best known as the long-time home of the expatriate writer and composer Paul Bowles and his wife Jane Bowles. The road the market is on is Rue Imam Kastalani. Bakal Hassan was convenient for people who lived in “California”, Jemaa el Mokhra or Sidi Masmoudi and you could park your car in front of the market and go inside to make a quick purchase. Hassan retired to live in Belgium, with annual visits to Tangier, but the mini supermarket is named after him. It has basic food items, including fresh vegetables, milk, waters, detergents, cold drinks, fresh breads and it sells butter, cheese, sandwiches, candies, nuts, snacks, butagas and cigarettes. The shop is very convenient for local residents of Ain Hayani. The young men who work at Mini market Hassan are all friendly and courteous. They will deliver to your home if you are in the immediate area.
