We must know that the death of Jesus Christ is not for us a subject of joy; we do not rejoice at his death and agony, but at the results of his death and sacrifice. What must be penetrated is that we sinned, not Him. It was we who offended God, not him. It was we who had to suffer separation from God, not him. He did not deserve these things since he was the Holy Son of God. And since death is the result of sin, he was not to die because he had not sinned. The Bible tells us that he came voluntarily to take on our sins, to be his substitute, and to spare us the condemnation that would inevitably fall on us. If the condemnation fell on him, it was because he had taken our sins on his account, because he had taken charge of them. So when we read in Scripture that Christ died for us, we must understand that He died in our place. He replaced us in death so that God could give us life.
