The Mon National Education Committee (MNEC) is a non-profit organization which provides educational services for children in the Mon communities in Mon and Karen States and in the Taninthayi Region and Thai-Myanmar Border Areas. In 1972, the New Mon State Party created a Central Education Department, which opened Mon “national schools” and Mon-language teaching schools in areas controlled by the New Mon State Party, and also in some areas outside. MNEC is formed in 1992. The MNEC is under the Central Education Department, and conducts curriculum development, capacity building for teachers and staff, and provides teacher support. The Mon national education schools reach out to all children who did not get access to schools, especially those in rural and remote areas. Since 1995, after the New Mon State Party signed a ceasefire with Burmese government, the number of Mon national schools and consequently teachers and students has steadily increased. In 2013-2014 academic year, MNEC has 800 teachers, 30,068 children (from Mon Nationals Schools and Mixed-schools) in 1 Mon Post-ten School (50 students in this year) and 143 Mon National Schools (3 High Schools, 12 Middle Schools and 128 Primary Schools) and 105 Mixed-school (Teaching Mon and Mon History Subject at government schools).
