Extremely beautiful, gorgeous lake, especially at winter. Looks like Baykal, but very different indeed. Sayan mountain range looks heavenly peacuful, it is something unbelievable. Ice on lake is very thick, transparent, constantly shattered and stray firm same time. Lake is accessible from Russia, There is ascetic, but good tourist company in Khankhvillage with very friendly and supportive staff.

After crossing dusty treeless landscapes, Khovsgol Lake glimmered with blues and greens under the big Mongolian sky. The lake is surrounded by mountain ranges. In winter the surface of the lake freezes over. Located in the northwest of Mongolia near the Russian border, at the foot of the eastern Sayan Mountains, Khovsgol Lake is 1,645 metres above sea level, 136 kilometres long and 262 metres deep. It is the largest fresh water lake in Mongolia, holding almost 70% of Mongolia's fresh water. It is said to hold 0.4% of all the fresh water in the world. Khovsgol (Khuvsgul) is one of seventeen ancient lakes in the world, being more than 2 million years old.

Highly recommend this place to visit. Great experience including fishing, raindeer and horseback riding and many more! Absolutely stunning views it has.
