The Church of the Holy Cross ⛪ demolished during religious persecution between 1930 and 1935, being rebuilt later.
In the book Religión, Politica y Sociedad - El Sinarquismo y la Iglesia en México by Rubén Aguilar and Guillermo Zermeño we read:
«In 1925 there were three churches in Villahermosa: the Esquipulas Cathedral, the Concepción and the Santa Cruz; all were destroyed.
The cathedral was closed on May 5, 1925 by order of the Ministry of Finance; in 1931 it became the First Rationalist School.
In 1934 Garrido determined to tear down the cathedral; he began by lowering the bells, with which he ordered a bust of Obregón to be made; the demolition was towards the month of June.
The Church of the Holy Cross was burned in 1928 and bombed on May 2, 1931; finally it was brought down to its foundations (...)
Only eight churches remained in the entire state, stripped and used as schools or warehouses. "
