Ocean Maya Royale

My wife and I had a quite unsatisfactory experience. Felt like a cheap cruise ship. My friends said it was good before but this was our first time. I’m assuming some places are struggling due to the shutdown last year. We showed up and were immediately pushed into taking a sales tour of the other resort, and they said it would take 90 minutes...more like 3.5 hours, basically half of our first day. We got a discount on a couples massage which was great and all... We paid for an upgraded room with a jacuzzi but we never had hot water to fill it, we rarely even have hot water to take a shower for the two nights we stayed. The food was not good, and we even had our “privilege dinner” where I had a steak and my wife had fish; both were severely overcooked. I expected beautiful fresh food and none of it was that. Like others have said, no cleaning of the room, no restocking towels or anything like that. Looks nice and all, but not really relaxing. The “party pool” is bumping right beside the “relax pool” so... Overly drunk people the first night yelling and banging around outside of our room was not fun. Drinks were super sweet and watered down. You could say there is a fun little atmosphere and a nice look to the grounds but that’s about it. We were so unhappy that we decided to pack up first thing after the second night and head back up to the area just north of Cancun where we found a much better place to spend our remaining 3 nights. Maybe things will improve later this year but this is where it stands now.

Food was lacking in quality. We had one restaurant to choose from that menu. We had ants covering our back deck wall, they came right out and sprayed. Staff was nice. We had the animals that roam around on our back deck and that was fun to watch them. Check in was long and hard to understand instructions. Beautiful resort.

I enjoyed my stay here with my wife and a friend of ours, the staff was very friendly, the views were very nice and the food was okay. The traveling was tough due to covid, but always better to be safe so no complaints there. Although our room was never made any day we were there, and towels and toilet paper were never refilled, little things but oh whale. Still had a great time and I would go again for the atmosphere, not so much the food or services.

UPDATE: When I attempted to leave early, I was informed that the travel agency I booked through (which their site doesn’t give you an option on) had to work with reservations and come to an agreement. As the stay was over New Years, no one was in the office until after the new year. Needless to say, once the staff found out I had given them a negative review there was a distinct change in how we were treated. The rooms weren’t cleaned as well, management called and argued about the review, and we didn’t receive the final day gift, which for our fellow “privileged” friends was a cute towel animal and chocolate covered strawberries. The non-privileged friends only got the towel animal. Oh, and the light fixture in the shower started pouring water one day. Basically a few key staff members were awesome, and made this tolerable, but that’s it. Also, if you’re wanting to get breakfast before flying out, don’t bother going to the privilege lounge. We were there an hour before our transport, and were 1/2 tables, and STILL didn’t get our food before we had to leave. Super awesome. The food is literally the worst I’ve ever had, most of the “included” amenities aren’t actually included (snorkeling, kayaking, etc), there’s a sales pitch that they con you into attending that took THREE HOURS, and we got food poisoning the 3rd day. Oh, and the room has a wall of mold funk that slams into your face as soon as you open it. We paid extra for the privileged status and it’s not in any way worth it. I will never recommend this resort, and will never return. It is in no way, shape, or form, a 5 star hotel.

We loved it there! Thank you to all the staff who were always so happy to help and made all of our days there amazing! Everything was very clean, the pools were great, the beach was great. The food was also really good. They had fun pool parties and there was always something to do at night like blackjack, karaoke, dance party, etc. It was truly a stress-free time
