Have you ever listen to the science podcast ologies? It is both scientific and approachable. Listening to our host share information about bees and other animals from the sanctuary felt like I was part of a live taping of the famous science podcast. Not only was the excursion informative, it also provide insights in life. The experience really makes you ponder on insights in life. We learned a lot about local Mayan culture and also traditions and way of life. The setting was impeccable. Our experience in the cenote was very profound. We were able to tap into something deeper about nature. Visit Akumal Natura for this unique experience to support animals from the sanctuary! You will not regret it!
We had a fun trip to the natura rescue. We learned a lot about the local wildlife and fauna. The highlight was a swim in the cenote. Bring your mask and snorkel for an even better view of the underwater beauty. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.
My wife and I visited the Akumal Natura Rescue while recently visiting the area. Let me preface that we are both very active in multiple Michigan animal rescue programs.
We were nothing but completely impressed by ANR. The variety of animals to interact with was outstanding. Among the animals in their rescue are: Spider Monkey, Owls, Eagles, Boa Constrictors, Parrots, Macaws, a local species of pig and many more.
Also on offering at ANR are samples of natural Gum Tree 'gum', Cinnamon leaves, SourSop Tea (reported to have anti-cancer properties) and delicious honey made by the Tetragonisca angustula stingless bee.
Both the owner and our guide for the tour were very generous with their time and knowledge. Not only giving us a very thorough tour of the facility but also taking the time to answer all of our questions and point out much of the local flora as well.
Their cenote was beautiful and great for a refreshing swim after our tour. All of the money raised from the tours / food goes directly back into the support of the animals at the facility.
ANR also engages in some re-population and release programs for many of the species in their care.
They also kindly gave us a ride back to the door of our hotel, included in the package price.
If you love animals and have any wish to support a well-run and caring animal rescue, go visit ANR. It was a great experience.
It's definitely a must do! Antonio and his team are doing a wonderful job rescuing local animals like spider monkeys, snakes, birds.... We particularly enjoyed the very friendly Spider Monkey Called MARGARITA! We were able to feed her and play with her. Moreover after spending some times with the animals, we went to swim in a wonderful cenote that is not very well known. What a privilege! We finished our day by tasting the Stingless Bee's honey. We ended-up buying 2 bottles at a very fair price (by the way, this money is only to help maintaining the REFUGE) This honey can be found only in that area and it's very good quality and tasty. To sum-up it was a Blessing, Interesting and Funny Day!
One of the highlights of my holidays in the yucatán. I spent half a day there with my friends and all of us were fascinated by this place. We had the chance to see spider monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, etc... Antonio explained to us the story of all the animals that live in the refuge, that was moving to know what they have been through. We also swam in two beautiful cenotes far from the crowd 😊 and tasted excellent honey from stingless bees.
