They manage to increase with "Stem cells" the strength of the heartbeat after infarction Doctors from the Germans Trias Institute of the Can Ruti Hospital and the Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC) have been able to increase the heartbeat strength by 21.6% by means of stem cell bioimplants. The research, published today by the journal "Stem Cells Translational Medicine", has been led by Dr. Antoni Bayés-Genís and funded in part by La Marató de TV-3. As Bayés-Genís explained, when myocardial infarction occurs, the heart loses strength to beat due to the death of the cells in the affected area, which stop receiving blood from the coronary arteries. This fact, depending on the severity, can condition the ability to carry out daily activities, as well as quality and life expectancy. Recovering part of the force to pump the blood is one of the challenges that the researchers of the regeneration of the heart pursue, such as the Heart Failure and Cardiac Regeneration (ICREC) group of the Germans Trias Institut. This group already demonstrated in 2013 the ability of a type of human stem cells from the umbilical cord of humans, called mesenchymal cells, to form small blood vessels in the infarcted area of mice and reoxygenate it. The cells were introduced in the form of a patch (bioimplant) accompanied by a protein called fibrin that helped fix them on the infarcted area and, after one month, there was a significant decrease in the measurement of the infarction. The next step has been to study the functionality of the heart thanks to this system and the result has been that the mice treated with mesenchymal cells after a heart attack have increased the strength of the heartbeat to pump blood by 21.6%.
