Mátape, a small and quiet town in Sonora, was the scene of a bloody and remembered battle, dated December 28, 1865. In this bellicose encounter, the forces of Francisco Barceló and Santiago Campillo, defenders of Maximiliano's empire, fought against the forces of the legendary General Jesús García Morales, defender of the republic and of the presidency of Benito Juárez. García Morales proposed a peculiar strategy: to attack his enemies from one flank and from the rear, in the Roman style, forcing the imperialists to leave the square and flee. Immediately afterwards, García Morales gave the order to pursue the defeated, an action that lasted for a period of three leagues, a distance in which many imperialists died from behind. The republicans had only 4 dead, while the imperialists 30, 11 wounded and 51 prisoners, in addition to losing rifles, cartridge belts and 20 horses. It was just one of many battles fought in Sonora, during the war against the Second Empire. TEXT: @mirinda_gd
