We stayed at El Chital for three nights, we were supposed to stay longer but unfortunately it didn’t quite meet our expectations based on the pictures and description. Location - you really are very removed from anything else, which on one hand is amazing as you essentially have the lake to yourself, however it does mean you’re pretty stuck there as it’s quite a long distance to get anywhere else and unlike Bacalar the lake is salt water so it’s definitely not as picturesque. Grounds - The natural setting and grounds are beautiful, but in general everything from the pool to the kayaks is in need of a great deal of maintenance and love. I imagine it would have been lovely when it first opened but there’s a lot that now needs doing to the property to bring it in line with the prices they are charging. Rooms - The rooms are log cabins and I think over time have started to smell VERY damp - the first room we were shown was unbearable. There is also NO FRESH WATER (salt water comes through the shower and taps) and whenever you use the hot tap there is an overwhelming smell of methane which makes for a very unpleasant shower!! Food - Breakfast is complimentary and even as vegans Alex (who was actually managing the property as well as cooking all our meals as we were the only guests there) went out of his way to look after us and create a special vegan menu so I cannot fault that at all, as he did an amazing job and the food was delicious (thank you Alex!) Overall, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend staying here unless you manage to get a very cheap deal. Alex was great but other than that there’s a lot that needs doing before they can justify the prices.

Very quiet place. Not close to bacalar at all, as they suggest. Nice cabanas, in the middle of nature. The lagoon had a mud soil, and is not as blue as the bacalar lake. You can use the kajaks. Dinner was not so good the first night, but was beter the second. Nothing is close by so you have to do all your eating and drinking in the hotel. A fridge in the room would have been Nice. After swimming in the pool our girls hair turned green, as well as the bathing suits. We can throw them away, because it doesn’t come out. I don’t know what was in the water, but time to clean the pool. But the place is relaxing and the garden wonderfull. We left one day early, because there is nothing to do in the neighbourhood.
