The five Franciscan missions of the Sierra Gorda were founded between 1751 and 1766 during the last phase of the conversion to Christianity of the interior of Mexico. The facades of these churches are important because of the “Mestizo Baroque” style, which shows significant indigenous influence by the Pame Indians who built them. The Mission Tilaco is in a beautiful setting down in a valley looking out across the landscape. You can see it for miles as you drive into town. Also, it has a beautiful fence around it that is different from the others.
