El Batán is the only psychiatric hospital that admits patients with mental disorders in Puebla
For 47 years, the Doctor Rafael Serrano "El Batán" Psychiatric Hospital has offered its services in Puebla.
The building was built during the government of the then president of Mexico Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (1967-1970), who ordered that five farm-type hospitals be built in the country, Puebla was one of the headquarters.
According to records from the Puebla State Health Services (SSEP), as of July 19, 2010, the hospital had 425 beds available; In the building, patients with chronic acute phase with symptoms that make it impossible to stay in society are hospitalized.
The objective of the Psychiatric Hospital is to reintegrate society in an active and productive way, through comprehensive treatment.
Currently, although the number of hospitalized patients is unknown, pediatric psychiatry clinic services are offered, which specialize in child and adolescent treatment; with the prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation of mental disorders and behaviors that affect minors.
There are also outpatient consultations for speech therapy, play therapy, early stimulation, neuropsychiatry, and therapy for adolescents.
Outpatient consultation, both psychological and psychiatric, is also given through the Psychosocial Rehabilitation clinic, there, mainly, people with conditions of:
Depression
Schizophrenia
Personality disorders
Psychologists offer workshops for people with anxiety and other mental disorders; In addition, geriatric services are offered. The Psychiatric Hospital has an area or clinic for sleep and another for electroencephalography.
Over the years, this property has adapted the service areas for other treatments, one of them is for addictions.
Through outpatient, psychological and psychiatric consultation, patients are diagnosed, from this area addiction prevention workshops are offered and even, if the patient expresses it, they are admitted for 35 days for the detoxification procedure and treatment.
The Hospital is the only one in service but it is deteriorated
At present it is the only psychiatric hospital that admits patients with mental disorders; However, the diagnosis published by the SSEP documents that, due to lack of maintenance, the hospital shows deterioration in its infrastructure, deficiencies in the floors of some areas and cracks in the walls.
Background
The building was built in the sixties, by instruction of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz who was President of the Republic from 1967 to 1970.
The building was in the old Hacienda El Batán, which means "nest of vipers" due to the fauna of the area.
The name given to the "Doctor Rafael Serrano" Psychiatric Hospital was in honor of this psychiatrist, originally from Puebla; According to his record, he obtained the Palme d'Or in Psychiatry due to his research and work in this field.
The surface of the hospital is 324 thousand 522 square meters and the building had a cost of 4 million 250 thousand pesos.
It was from January 1967 that the recruitment of personnel began in the period from April to July of the same year.
On July 6, 1967, he received his first patients, who came from the La Castañeda General Asylum with the first 150 patients.
Subsequently, he had three other transfers, the second with 150, the third with 148 patients and the last on November 29, 1967.
However, it was on December 1 of that year, it was inaugurated by Gustavo Díaz Ordaz who was accompanied by General Rafael Moreno Valle, who was Secretary of Health and Assistance.
Prior to the construction of El Batán, the San Roque Hospital existed in Puebla, in 1590 according to history, it was in this year when the construction permits were processed, but it was not until two years later that they received care for the
