Site of ITTO project "Valuation of forest environmental services in Mexico" RED-PD 045/11 Rev.2 (M). Ecosystems such as mangrove forests, flood forests, rainforests and scrub forests on dunes, and their connectivity, are prioritized in Mexico’s climate-change mitigation policies thanks to an assessment and economic valuation conducted in the state of Veracruz. The valuation found these ecosystems crucial for, among other things, reducing flood peaks, providing a reliable supply of fresh water, conserving biodiversity, maintaining the soil nutrient cycle, producing biomass, and sustaining livelihoods. In response, the project helped to build capacity in local communities to improve forest management and raise awareness of the benefits this brings. A particular focus was put on empowering women, who have been running nurseries, creating ecotourism, conducting reforestation campaigns and have written a scientific book on the medicinal plants in the region.

The institute "opens its doors to the public and external graduates so that they are interested in science and collaborate in research projects." However, the credibility of the Institute is diminished by this type of action, it seems quite the opposite. It should not be said later that young people are not interested in science / research, it seems that "much of it already has separate names and surnames".

It is a Public Research Center of the National Council of Science and Technology dedicated to the study, sustainable management and conservation of Biodiversity. It has research facilities, a botanical garden and the Fog Forest Sanctuary.
