It was built by the Jesuits and was completed around 1675. With the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, the government ceded the temple to the Mithras of Michoacán. In 1854, when the diocese was erected, it was designated Parish of the Tabernacle and from 1855 to 1866, while the transformations of the Cathedral were carried out, it served as such. The Loreto Chapel, dating from 1700, stands next to the Parish. This chapel was the best of all that the Society of Jesus had in Mexico.
