At the time we visited Chichen-itza, I was teaching fourth grade in an international school, where the social studies curriculum dealt with the Maya Civilization. Therefore, I was delighted to get to visit the same sites that I had been teaching about in school. It was very hot that day, but we climbed several of the Mayan pyramids, walk on the ancient ball fields, and attempted to decipher the enigmatic face-like glyphs in the various monuments. Due to its proximity to the Yucatán, it was a perfect compliment to what we had seen at Tulum on the coast.

Went here on my honeymoon May 19 1990, it is amazing got a tour guide that was very knowledgeable about this site and the Maya in general. It was very hot and humid in May couldn't imagine what it would be like in August. The history here is amazing we went to the top of the pyramid then but not sure your allowed to anymore. Went to the top of the temple of the warriors and sat on the alter of sacrifice where many men had their heads cut off. There is a large ball field where teams put a ball through a hoop, I believe was called temple of the Jaguars. This may be one of the most exciting and important archeological sites in all of North America. Not to be missed, approximately 80 miles from Cancun ~ took tour bus that was full, came back at night, was an amazing adventure, highly recommend.

Just wow. Will be studying up on what our tour guide told us. Was an amazing experience. One tip though! Don’t go in the dead middle of summer! Too hot on the tour bus!

Incredible experience in many ways, the amazing pyramids and the great many questions they raise of course but also the local history and the generally enjoyable outing itself. Be sure to bring extra water and snacks with you.
