Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, the Indian "seer" of Santa María de Guadalupe, was apparently born around 1474 and died in 1548. Some primitive Guadalupan indigenous sources, and later the "Spanish" ones, explicitly call him "ambassador_messenger" of Santa María de Guadalupe. He was beatified in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City on May 6, 1990 by John Paul II during his second apostolic trip to Mexico. The history of his Cause is closely linked to that of the Guadalupano event. From a legal point of view, a process was opened in 1666 to acknowledge the fact. The petition was signed by the Bishop of Puebla, Governor of the Archdiocese of Mexico, seat vacant, and by the viceroy of New Spain. The "Information" was only read in 1667 by the Sacred Congregation of Rites without giving, as far as we know, an answer.
