Legend has it that at the end of the 16th century, two mules arrived at the main square, each carrying a box. They remained there for several days without anyone claiming them until the authorities decided to check the contents of the boxes. When they opened, they found candlesticks, tablecloths and the images of the virgin of sorrows and Christ. The people considered this miraculous fact and the images were transferred to the Franciscan convent where they began to be venerated.

Franciscan temple where the Lord of the Convent is venerated. It has a Baroque altarpiece with images of Franciscans. It is part of the Franciscan convent of San Luis Obispo built at the end of the 16th century, and it is reached by a long and narrow atrium that begins in front of the east side of Huamantla's main square. Not to be confused with the parish of San Luis Obispo, whose church is located in front of the northwest corner of the plaza de armas.
