Kellie's Castle (Sri Maha Mariamman Temple)

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Ladang Kinta Kellas, Batu Gajah,Perak Situated along the Gopeng-Batu Gajah road and about a kilometre from the famed Kellie's Castle, this Mariamman temple is said to have been built by the Scottish planter William Kellie Smith himself . Childless for many years, it is said that Kellie longed for a son to inherit his business empire and prayed to Amman so after the birth of his son, he built the Mariamman temple as suggested by his workers and in appreciation of Kellie's devotion and kindness the workers of his rubber plantation erected a statue of him standing alongside the other deities thus immortalizing him forever.It is also believed that a tunnel connecting the castle to the temple was built for his family so that they could visit the temple regularly.Needless to say, Kellie had a clear fascination and deep involvement with Indian culture and that appeared to have been the motivation behind his actions. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple of Kinta Kellas Estate The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple of Kinta Kellas Estate was build by William Kellie as a token of appreciation to Amman the Hindu Goddest for granting him his wish to have a baby boy. Kellie statue stand alongside Hindu God and Goddeses on the roof of the temple something which you can't see elsewhere. It is located about 150m from Kellie's castle and is said to be connected to the castle by tunnels with entrance somewhere in the wine cellar which have been sealed for safety by the museum people.

This Hindu Temple was as old as the Kellie Castle, and there was a statute of Mr Kellie in the row of goddesses on side wall of the temple. The Hindu community celebrated Kellie as the Master who helped them during the Estate time.

Nice enough mandir but not overly impressed, claim to fame was that it was constructed by Mr Kellie from next door.

The temple is located near to the Kellie castle. It is believed that the temple was built by the Kellie Castle owner. Once, the estate workers were attacked by some strange disease hence all the workers told Mr William Kellie Smith about it and he built it on the castle land. There are Mariamman, Ganapathy, Murugan, Shivan and navagaragam. Big space and located at the roadside. From the castle roof,the temple is visible.
