We often come to Nijverdal. We are fairly well known, have acquaintances, and find it a nice place for shopping. Last year 2017, due to circumstances, I was not allowed to stay behind the wheel for long, no drink, torn arm muscles. So then we only visited once, really several times a year. We have written about some shops and eateries, the so-called reviews, but also looked at what is now the oldest church, the village church or the large church. Well Nijverdal itself is not that old, it appears, so church history also only starts after the 18th century, after the various religious wars and then freedom of religion came. The Catholic Reformed Church appeared on the scene almost simultaneously. Anthonius of Padua parish was founded in 1905 and the church was consecrated in 1920. The Reformed Church originated from a wooden emergency church in 1910. However, this church was completely demolished in 1970, there is no longer left and a new church has risen, so history is 1970. Nijverdal is located in Twente and in ancient writings Twente can be found successively as Tuianti (797), Tueanti (799), Thuehenti (851), Tuente (11th century) and finally Twente or Twenthe. Two theories are common for the origin of this name. The first and oldest dates back to the 16th century when Twente was identified as the residential area of the Germanic tribe of the Tubanten known from Roman antiquity. The second theory is based on the similarity between the names Twente and Drenthe. As the name Drenthe is derived from the numeral three, it is believed that Twente is derived from the word two. Before the eleventh or twelfth century, the Drenthe and Twente shires still bordered each other. In the Middle Ages there were the usual skirmishes, the region was pagan for a long time, after the 10th and 11th centuries, the influence of the diocese of Utrecht came. There were some monasteries, but also the 80-year war with the Reformation came over Twente, it became partly Protestant, but the Counter-Reformation also ensured a large part of the Catholic life. It didn't take until around 1900 before 'real' churches came. These were the St Anthonius of Padua that is still there in the Grote Straat, a shopping street, and the Reformed Church in the Kerkstraat, which was, however, completely newly built in 1970, but is out of use in 2011 and is for sale, so it goes sometimes that. The NH and Ger. Church merged July 7, 2011.
