Very active religious community, we were greeted by a friendly lady, handed out some sheets explaining about the church and warmly sent on our way when our visit had finished

The Baptist church "Vermaning" on the Oude Gracht was established in 1773 by a thorough renovation of a medieval canal house that had been a brewery for a while (as early as 1576). The facade seems more like a stately mansion than a church. That was desirable at the time because the Mennonites were only tolerated. So the building looked a bit like a church. There was official freedom of religion at the time, but it was not allowed to notice anything. To my taste it all looks very sober. That of course corresponds to the view of the Protestants after the reform / iconoclasm.
