From this location, some 78 V-2 rockets were launched towards Antwerp between 3 February and 7 March 1945.
A launch pad was placed in Hessum on the eastern border of Rechteren at the end of December 1944 and many residents in that area were forced to leave their homes and hearths. A launch rig operating personnel consisted of an SS unit of about 480 men housed nearby. Calculations indicate that 118 V2 rockets were launched at Antwerp from Hessum. After the Allied fighter-bombers had discovered and attacked this location, the launch pad with the operating personnel was transferred to the forests of the Mataram home on Poppenallee. From there, 78 launches, also aimed at the port of Antwerp, took place. Research has shown that 10 to 15 percent of all launches failed, causing the missile to land in a random place, often in the vicinity of the launch facility, causing shock and damage. As far as is known, there were no civilian victims in Dalfsen. On March 8, 1945, the German SS soldiers left the Mataram and a week later the residents were forced to return.
