The famous kaasmarkt or cheese market, is no longer a market, but a tourist attraction. It is unknown when the first market took place however old documents have been found that confirm that a market took place in 1622. It is now a replica cheese market on Friday summer mornings, with cheese porters in traditional costumes, with explanations in several languages.

I'm not usually one for the clear tourist stuff, usually it makes me start to feel like I'm turning plastic, but this is the exception to the rule whether you're a traveler or a tourist (God help you if you're the latter). They're keeping their culture alive with this weekly attraction that will leave you questioning the exact method of how this mass, ancient, cheese accounting system / demonstration works. It's pretty rad though. All the hustle and bustle of guys running in synch with however many kilos of cheese on a platform. The scales and balancing process. The cheese guild master walking about inspecting the cheese and offering free tastes to the crowd. It's got it's own vibe. It's its own thing for a reason. If you're looking for an escape from the bustling and vibrant capital of Amsterdam, and want a slightly more relaxed Dutch experience for a day, take the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Alkmaar and explore this hidden gem of the north.

Incorrect description on your website says that in August it is done every Tuesday and specific the day but in a wrong way. Example, we went on the 14th of August (Wednesday) as you can on the web but everything seems to have been Tuesday, August 13 ... A pity for the tourist that comes from Amsterdam.

You have to have seen. Very nice also a canal cruise through Alkmaar
