Medium sized church in the center of Almelo - beautiful organ - very active people who put many activities on the agenda - an old but very well maintained church with interesting history. Many choirs perform here and many concerts large and small.

The places Enschede, Hengelo and Almelo are now not so far apart, due to the various expansions, housing construction and population growth. It used to be different, the transport was not so fast and rigorous .. Hence you see different churches everywhere with the same systems, initially RC churches became Protestant by the Reformation and later new RC churches were built to replace the seized by battle churches. The Grote Kerk on the church square in Almelo is one of them. The Grote Kerk was founded in 1236 by lord van Almelo as a closing chapel. This chapel became parish church of the city of Almelo in 1299. The church was dedicated to St. George and St. Mauritius. The choir of the current church was built in 1493. From 1619, the church has been used for Protestant worship. The ship and the tower were demolished in 1738 and replaced by the current construction with transverse building in the form of a Greek cross. The gothic choir survived. Under this choir is the vaulted vault of the count's family with which the church has always been strongly connected. The tower has 3 bells (1629, 1738 and 1970). The organ was built in 1754 by A.A. Hinz. The grave monument on the choir dates from 1772 and the funeral sign from 1779. The current tower crowning was placed in 1781. A major restoration took place in 1955, during which the tomb of the choir moved to the northern crosshouse. The Venetian glass chandeliers, like the pulpit, were placed after this restoration. The tower of the church is owned by the civil municipality of Almelo.
