The Grieving Woman stands in a park on the Westergracht in Haarlem, near the Sint Bavo Cathedral. It is more than two meters high and made of natural stone, of a "grieving, pensive, somewhat embittered, self-centered woman". It was designed and made by Oswald Wenckebach on the initiative of the Resistance Monument Westergracht Committee. The statue, which was unveiled in 1949, is each year during the National Remembrance Day on 4 May the backdrop for one of the ceremonies that are then held in Haarlem. The monument has been adopted by the Bavo Primary School in Haarlem. The statue is reminiscent of the death of ten members of the resistance who were shot by the occupiers on 26 October 1944 at the St. Bavo church. Among them were Cornelis Vlot and Jo Wüthrich. The executions were part of a German revenge campaign because of the death of police officer Fake Krist, who had been wound up by the Haarlem resistance the day before. The names of the victims are written on loose stones around the base of the statue.
