The Balloërkuil allegedly is the place where justice was spoken in medieval times - at least this was the opinion of 17th century local historians such as Johan Picardt. This spot was for this reason acquired by the Drenthe province in 1846. It is however more likely a natural sandy open spot in the oak tree forest. Very pleasant place to be!

Best pit ever. I really don't want to call myself a pit expert, but this is the best pit in the area. Lots of parking spaces there too, so good to do even in crowds. Go back soon!

The Drents used to have their own jurisdiction. Their highest court was the Etstoel, which met three times a year. The meetings were held in the open air at this Balloër pit, which is therefore of great historical significance. The judiciary was held by the chairman and 24 Etten (= jurors).
