On December 27, 1905, a competition was held for a design for a new town hall. The design by the 25-year-old architect Jan Stuivinga was awarded the first prize. This design was worked out and in 1908 a whole new town hall was realized on Het Rond. The interior and exterior are in neo-Renaissance style, with the main shape inspired by the German and the detailing on the Dutch Renaissance.
