Workshop - museum of blacksmith and carpenter cooper. Rebuilt near the visitor center of Zandam this workshop with blacksmith cooper at work offers the opportunity to see the construction of a barrel, paying a ticket for entry. The whole area offers the possibility to create beautiful photographs.

On the territory of Zaanse Schans there is an interesting Bochkarei Workshop that will help you plunge into history. The guests are presented with a fully equipped, authentic S.R. Tiemstra & Sons from Ostzan. Jaap Timstra left the workshop after his death in 1999. Then the workshop for the manufacture of barrels was moved to the building, which previously housed the brewery Schuitemakerij. It was located in Rustenburg in Zaandam, but was demolished in 1964, and its contents were deposited. In 1967, the warehouse was reconstructed in Zaanse Schans, and now everyone who is interested in the history of the cooperage has the opportunity to see the workshop. Cooperage was widespread. In the 21st century, the cooper profession is still necessary, since real wooden barrels are required in the production of wine and brandy. Cooper with an ax and other carpentry tools (which you can see in large numbers in this workshop) adjusts the rivets of the barrel one to the other, straightens them, makes the folds (loops) a minesweeper, drives them into the bottom and connects everything with wood or iron hoops. Cooperage is a special craft, because making a wooden barrel is not easy: it must be able to store and transport many different things. Whether flour, spices, butter or water - nothing should flow out. Not to mention gunpowder ... A very atmospheric place!
