It is the capital of the Dutch province of North Brabant. It lies on the Dommel River and the Zuid Willemsvaart canal in a swampy landscape about 80 km south of Amsterdam. The city is an important railway junction with direct express connections to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, Maastricht and Nijmegen. There are a number of small and medium-sized industrial enterprises, especially the tobacco, textile, footwear, engineering, etc. industries, but services predominate. The city has over 140,000 inhabitants, is the seat of the provincial administration, courts, medical facilities, schools and the Catholic diocese. The place was inhabited as early as Roman times, in the Middle Ages a town was established, which acquired city rights in 1185 and in the years 1450–1525 it prospered greatly thanks to trade. In 1629 they were conquered by Frederik Hendrik Orange and in the following years a practically impregnable citadel was built. In 1940, the Netherlands was occupied by the Germans and a concentration camp was set up near the town.
