LUX

I have had a previous good experience at LUX in terms of the movie theater and that whole experience. However, last night I went and didn't have as nice of an experience. I am an international student studying in Nijmegen. I do not speak Dutch, however I am learning, but it is a slow process. I arrived for my movie a few minutes early and approached a women who was working there. I asked her if she was the one who was going to scan my ticket. She responded to me in Dutch, and I said to her, "I'm sorry, I don't understand, do you speak English?" She proceeded to say that same sentence to me 3 times, still me not understanding. She then stopped and says to me, "You live and Holland and can't speak Dutch, you better start learning." And again, repeated the same sentence to me in Dutch that she had previously said 3 times before. (I figured out that she was saying the theater wasn't ready yet, and I needed to wait a couple minutes). This came as a surprise and shock to me, since LUX is known for being a cultural place, bringing together debates, films, and people from all different backgrounds. This woman made me feel very unwelcome and as though this environment is only for people from the Netherlands. Like I previously said, I have had good experiences at LUX and I don't want this to deter me from going back, but I felt like I should share my experience, so others and LUX can be aware of the way this interaction made me feel in a space that is known to bring in culturally diverse ideas and people.

Nice selection of movies. The restaurant at the ground floor is usually quite full, it is also possible to buy beer and drink it in the hall while watching the movie. Several medium and small size halls

Cinema/ theatre has some slick movies on show, furniture is kinda old and faded though + less comfy... Still think its a cool place and recommend you to look for movies here. Prices are A! okay! 😁

Friendly staff, you feel right at home. Also nicely sized cinema rooms, which gives the place a homey feel. Would recommend!
