This square still has the potential to become one of the most beautiful squares in Leiden, however, it keeps failing. Many millions have already been pumped in and every few years it is refurbished. Unfortunately it always remains 'a bald unimaginative gang' to say it straight from the heart. Mill 'de Valk' on the square was once enclosed by a beautiful green oasis of bushes until an official came up with the idea to tear away this last piece of green on the square again, the result is once again a bare plain around a windmill with some miserable 'fake cheaters' sprouted from a clerk pen, probably to draw attention away from the paving stones. When the Dutchman with the angular brain is going to redesign something, he is the first to pull all the trees and all other green from the ground and only then starts to think about a possible new plan. The consequence in a planologized society is that every few decades the spontaneous hunches of an ambitious civil servant are first slowly presented to the citizens via the media, you can see it coming from afar, and that a few decades later everyone is clear that the plan of ever being just the umpteenth mistake of a (excusez le mot) pen-dispatcher. This process repeats itself over and over again in an identical way, and in my life I have not seen any change in thinking in 50 years. Almost every square in Leiden has already been dealt with and none have succeeded. Time and again there was 'grass and clinkers', this time with some height difference and a 'straight' visible mill. The last grove in the neighborhood was gone, it didn't even scare me anymore.
