Exhibition 'Archeology in the Hoeksche Waard' City Hall Binnenmaas Maasdam / Puttershoek. 20 Sep 2017 to 09 Nov 2017 City Hall Binnenmaas, Sportlaan 22, 3299 XG Maasdam. From September 20, the exhibition "Archeology in the Hoeksche Waard" can be seen in the town hall of Binnenmaas. It is an educational exhibition in which the distant history of the Hoeksche Waard and Binnenmaas is shown in particular by means of objects and visual material. The exhibition is divided into three periods: prehistoric (Neolithic), Roman and Middle Ages (13th century). Prehistory The immediate reason for the exhibition is the very recent finds in Puttershoek of a settlement from the Neolithic period (also known as the early Stone Age), the period of the first farmers. During the construction of the last phase of the Neighborhood of Life, pottery fragments, food remnants and a small hand ax were found. This spectacular discovery shows that there was very early permanent residence in the Hoeksche worth. The objects can be seen at the exhibition. Roman time The Roman period is dependent on the special presence of the Romans, especially in Mijnsheerenland and Westmaas in the third century AD. A harbor, habitation and a military site of the 30th Legion, including a watchtower, were part of the Roman border defenses during that period. In the town hall you can see original finds, but also replicas that can be touched. Middle Ages The medieval part of the exhibition is mainly about the imaginative Castle of Weede. The foundations of the castle - one of the largest in our country in its heyday - lie next to and under the provincial road N217 between Maasdam and 's-Gravendeel. The finds from this period paint a picture of this castle, abandoned and collapsed in the 15th century, and its noble inhabitants. The exhibition can be visited until Thursday 9 November 2017 during the opening hours of the town hall: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and on Tuesday from 8.30 am to 8 pm.
