Tobruk Strijen Sas

In the Mariapolder, Strijensas, you can find this only remaining German building "Tobruk" from the Second World War in this neighborhood. The Tobruk was a one-man bunker from which a soldier operated a machine gun. This Tobruk was strategically positioned, the "Dordtse Kil" river was easy to see from the top of the harbor. A Tobruk often had a service function for other, larger bunkers. This Tobruk was built during the war just 300 meters from the large VIS casemate that was also occupied by the Germans at that time and used to guard the junction of Dordtse Kil and Hollands Diep. At the moment, the Tobruk protrudes about 90 cm above the ground, but during the war there was a large pile of earth around it so that the Tobruk was almost invisible or hit by enemy attackers, in this case Canadians and Poles.
