The Valkenburg station (opened in 1853), built from marl blocks, is the oldest surviving train station in the Netherlands. The beautiful, castle-like building is very photogenic and gives just that little bit extra cachet to your train journey. It was commissioned by the Aachen-Maastrichtsche Spoorweg-Maatschappij, which built the first international railway line in the Netherlands from 1845. With the regular trains you can go to Maastricht or Heerlen and with the museum trains of the ZLSM you can take the "Miljoenenlijntje" to Kerkrade.

Very pretty place, unusual buildings all kept very well. The witch on the broomstick was a surprise to us just next door to the railway on Station Road
