The main castle or "Bovenste Slot" comprises a Motte castle on a natural elevation with a large marlstone keep from about 1200, called "Witte Toren". In the 13th century, a polygonal ring wall was built around a courtyard. Of a large hall with living quarters built against the ring wall, only the arched cellars are left. Only a few remains of a 13th-century square gate tower on the north side of the castle. The so-called "Red Tower" and the well tower, which is next to it, were built by Jan van Heinsberg and date from around 1450 .

Wedged between the A76 / E314 and the Juliana Canal, the castle ruin of Stein is hidden between the trees. The castle complex consists of a main castle (the "Upper Castle") and an outer castle (the "Lower Castle"). Although there was (probably) a fortified farm on the motte of Stein around 1220, the oldest parts of the castle date from ± 1300. Over the next 170 years, the castle will be enlarged, strengthened and expanded. The best preserved and most eye-catching parts of this moated castle are the White Tower (the keep built in marl stone) and the Red Tower (a brick entrance tower). The main and outer bailey were separated by a moat and drawbridge until the first half of the 18th century. The buildings of the outer bailey are much later: the gatehouse dates from the 16th century (although the characteristic mansard roof dates from 1730), the neoclassical east wing dates from 1840 and the coach house was built 20 years later. The last (and perhaps ugliest) addition is the former residence for students of the 20th century. The castle has had many (noble) residents, from the original Lords of Steyn to the fathers of the Congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. One of these fathers was Jacques Schreurs, the author of the "Diary of a Sheepdog". The castle ruins are a nice start or end point for a walk in the area.
