The Helpoort is part of the first city wall, which was built after Henry I, Duke of Brabant, who gave permission to build in April 1229. It is the only city gate that is still present in Maastricht and the oldest city gate in the Netherlands! The gate has been used as a defense for about two centuries. It lost this function as a defence when the Nieuwstad, the area south of the gate, was surrounded by a new wall (it was built in the second half of the 15th century). After the new built wall, the gate was used for various purposes: meeting place for the cloth riders or fullers, gunpowder storage and housing.

Historic buildings in a quaint setting. Well worth a visit if you come to Maastricht

Awesome place. Even better are the cannons next to it.

Nice little piece of history in the middle of town. Shame access to the wall was closed...

The place is cool. But never ever use wardrobe service. They literally destroy my coat. They say that it is not their fault if the clothes suffer any damage... I literally saw how the lady instead of unhang the coat properly just pushed/pull down the coat very strong and destroy it... I will never use it again...
