The structure from 1966 with a curved roof was built to the design of architect Piet de Vries. There are four screw pumps in the hall. The pumping station discharges the water from the Frisian basin on the IJsselmeer. The pumping station was officially opened on 10 May 1967. It is located south of the Johan Friso lock. In 2011, after a thorough renovation, capacity was increased by more than twenty percent to 7,300 m3 per minute. The Hoogland pumping station took over the task from the other pumping station in Friesland that discharges water into the IJsselmeer, namely the ir. D.F. Woudagemaal in Lemmer. This pumping station now only needs to support at very high water levels.
