Sint-Andreaskerk

1936 church with plain interior. Has been rebuilt after WWII

The Andreaskerk is a neo-Gothic, three-aisled church with a laterally placed four-section tower with constricted spire in Velden, municipality of Venlo. The original church tower, dating from around 1300, was built of marl, the priest's choir originally dates from 1509 and the aisles from 1857. The church was demolished in 1933, after which a new church was built by Jules Kayser, which was used a year later. was taken. Next to the church is a Sacred Heart statue (1930). The tower was blown up in 1945 and the rest of the church was severely damaged. In the following two years, the church was restored to its former glory, but the tower was not rebuilt until 1955. Determining for the monumental valuation are some statues dating from 1700, two baroque side altars from the 18th century and Gothic Revival pulpit from 1862. The main altar and communion benches date from 1894. The original organ probably dates from the 18th century, but was replaced in 1937 by a new organ. Due to war damage, this new organ had to be restored in 1948. Towards the end of 1944, the Velden church was frequently hit by shells. The spire fell heavily damaged by bullet fire. The church was also frequently the target of looting by German soldiers in the following year. The rest of the church was eventually blown up at the end of the war, after the entire village had been evacuated. On March 4, among the ruins of the former church on a side altar, the first Holy Mass was held, attended by 39 villagers still present. In total, ten percent of the houses in Velden were destroyed by war violence.
