Nice and intimate museum in the rebuilt tower of Valkenburg (ZH). With a nice reward as an extra reward! Two subjects are central to the history of this village: the Roman settlement that was situated at the beginning of the era on the Oude Rijn on the spot where Valkenburg is now located and the role that Valkenburg played in the May days of 1940 during the Battle of the Residence, where not only the nearby airport was fought heavily, but also the village of Valkenburg was hit hard. Next to the tower museum is a monument for the civilians who died in May 1940 and there is a Dutch war cemetery. The museum has limited opening hours (Saturdays) and is staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. A large part of the museum can be reached by elevator.

Worth the effort

Small is beautiful. Normally only open on Saturday afternoon. A timeline about the history of Valkenburg, information about Holland's oldest horse market and about the fighting around Valkenburg airport in the May days of '40. Most of the space is reserved for foundations from the Roman castellum that stood on this site. The volunteers are always willing to give a personal tour and the view from the tower is beautiful.
