Vestingkerk

The first inhabitants of Hellevoetse – Sluys and Weergors went to church in the village of Nieuw-Hellevoet in the early 17th century. The tender for an own church building took place on August 19, 1661, the construction of which would not go smoothly because of the subsidence and the failure of the foundation of the church hall and tower. On May 1, 1686 the building was inaugurated as Hellevoetsluis Reformed Church, after a construction period of 25 years full of technical setbacks and lack of money, as a result of which the work was constantly stopped. The Vestingkerk is built as a Protestant church (in contrast to the many older Protestant churches on Voorne-Putten, which were all built as an RC church, so before the Reformation) It is a simple hall church. The slender brick tower, the upper part adorned with three circular arc niches in each façade surface and topped by an octagonal wooden bell dome, was completed in 1693. Until 1967 there were still windows in the front and back and until 'the French Age' (1795-1813) all windows were fitted with stained glass (unfortunately smashed by the patriots). The tower originally contained a loud bell. This clock was demanded and removed by the German occupier on 2 June 1943 to serve the arms industry via the smelting furnaces. On November 24, 1949, thanks to the efforts of the municipal administration, the new clock could be hung in. A carillon was installed in the tower in 1978, a gift from a local industrialist. The weather vane on the dome, shows a lamb; lamb of God, Agnus Dei.
