The Sint Martinus church has its origin on a (not so high) mound in the 12th century. In its first form it was a wooden chapel. Around 1330 work began on the stone church (the higher rear / choir), which was not finished until 1400. From 1461 this Catholic church belonged to the Diocese of Utrecht. After the reformation it became a Reformed church (and now it is a Protestant church). It is striking that the church stands behind the houses in a strange place. In the late Middle Ages there were farms to the west of the church, on the Brielse Maas, which was still in open connection with the sea, separated only by the Maasdijk. Because of the many dyke breaches, the settlement later concentrated on a safer place, along the banks of the "Hollemare", a creek that flows into the current port. source: reliwiki.nl The lower part with built-in tower (from 1597) was built at the end of the 16th century, but the inside has never been finished and this part has never been used for worship. source: VVV
