The Wester Cemetery is a municipal cemetery in IJmuiden located on the Havenkade; the entrance is on Fultonstraat. The bierhuisje in the cemetery is a municipal monument. The cemetery was closed in 1964, but is now freely accessible and burial is again taking place. The plot of land was purchased in 1896 by the Amsterdamsche Kanaal Maatschappij, the company responsible for the construction of the North Sea Canal, as a cemetery for the new residence that had arisen here. The first gravedigger was the farmer Albert Braam, grandfather of the writer Conny Braam [1]. The ownership and management of the cemetery was later transferred to the municipality of Velsen. The cemetery contains the burial of resistance fighters (including Jan Bonekamp) and six German sailors who died in the First World War. Part of the cemetery is reserved for use by the Old Catholic Church. Its maintenance is provided by volunteers from the Old Catholic Funeral Association. Source: Wikipedia
