It is a pity that the emissions from this factory (formerly Leopack) can stink like this. It is water vapor but it is also a lot of combustion gases from the gas-fired drying tunnels (cabinets) and also gases from burnt oil for the lubrication of the conveyor belts. The water vapor also seems to contain residues of the chemical additives that have to re-bind the fibers of the pulp. I have indications that production has recently been increased. This also increased emissions, which can be noticed and smelled. The capacity of the natural gas supply has been considerably increased. The number of m3 gas burned per hour is known. At this large amount, it is clear how many combustion gases enter the air at one concentrated point and enter my bedroom from time to time. The emission takes place in a natural way, the heat of the emission causes the vapor to rise by itself. It is also possible that the vapor is forced out, fans are audible. The emissions are very concentrated, the waste paper is soaked in a paper bath. Modern printing ink is difficult to neutralize, the pulp is bleached with peroxides. The chemicals in the pulp evaporate in the drying cabinets. The vapors and gases form a cloud in the open air. This cloud passes over the center and descends to street level. The cloud is very concentrated and very difficult to break down. In strong winds, emissions are still compact and bothersome at a distance of 500 meters. The emission points are at a height of only eight meters. The vapor cools down quickly and therefore drops to street level, in addition, the emission (Nox) is slightly heavier. In a wind direction zzw and zww, the nuisance is maximum, especially during the peak hours of production (bulk production of egg cartons), which is between 23.00 o'clock and 7 o'clock, mostly on weekends when working students are available. Bringing emissions into higher air layers is not possible. Placing odor filters will be very difficult. Due to an increase in production, emissions have increased, thereby also hindering local residents. It is curious that the number of complaints is small. It is an important employer. It seems necessary to me that the content of the emissions is measured. Fortunately, the wind direction is often variable and the intensity of the emissions is also variable. The permits run via the province, from time to time higher emissions are permitted. They do not want to say anything about the concentration of toxic substances in emissions.
The factory has all certificates and says that the environment is of paramount importance. It is a pity that from time to time the emissions look a lot like an exhaust from a huge diesel engine, not pleasant if you go to bed in the summer after a hot day, with the windows forced to close. The emissions are then very annoying and hopefully not too toxic. Given the pungent smell of burnt oil, it cannot be a health issue. Fortunately we can go to the caravan. The municipality of Waadhoeke is apparently not doing that hard, more and more houses are being built around the factory. Personally I would never buy a house there. Such a smelly exhaust at the door of your expensive house, I would not consider that risk justified. Huhtamaki has contacts with Urgenda, it is said to develop a method that makes it possible to remove the paper bath from the production method. The aim will be that the pulp from that water bath no longer has to be bleached. Gas consumption for the drying process will decrease. The toxic emissions in the open air will also have to fall sharply. But first see and then believe. Previous tests have been carried out to remove the cellulose from roadside grass. That was certainly not a success.
Nice company
