Brugkerk

Beautiful church.

Church dates from 1838. Architect A. Blaauw. National monument no. 38202. The church replaced the old church (1430). That church was on Kerkweg, close to the Dorpsstraat. The entrance to the church was on Kerkstraat, which ended in the tower. That old church was demolished due to dilapidation when the current church was ready. The organ and the 2 psalm signs below the galleries are the only historical pieces that have survived from the old church. The organ was transferred to the Brugkerk in 1838 by Firma Lohman, organ makers in Groningen and Gouda. In 1859 the tombstone floor, which came from the old church, was removed from the Brugkerk because of the extreme pressure that they exerted on the walls. Around 1880, tour portals were built on both sides of the church hall. The galleries date from 1902. The church was thoroughly restored in the years 1977-1979 whereby the church was placed on a new foundation, the walls were plastered again and a new ceiling was installed. The organ was restored in 1953 by Van Vulpen, in 1972 by L.J. Kramer from Boskoop and last in 1994 by Blank from Herwijnen. The organ is the only preserved church organ of Gouda Organ Maker Schmidt.
