Introduction: Outside the dike on the river side of the Waaldijk in Herwijnen, former PEILHUISJE located. It was built in 1874 and was used to measure water heights and observe ice. It fell out of use in 1989 when water levels were recorded by computer. Inside is the old MEASURING INSTRUMENT from 1926, which is still completely intact. Such a gauge house has stood in Bruinisse. The measuring house is located on a basalt stone slope and is surrounded by a (partly renovated) wooden fence. On the left there are three more so-called OUTER SHELLS. Description: The water level house is built on a rectangular ground plan, the long side of which runs parallel to the Waaldijk. It has one storey under a zinc-covered gable roof with a roof rack construction. The facades are plastered and painted white. The FACADE is symmetrically arranged. In the center of the ground floor is a round arched wooden double door. The façade surface is flanked by corner battens that merge at the top into the arched frieze below the eaves and at the bottom into the plinth. The recessed surface thus created is articulated horizontally by two protruding moldings that connect to the protruding door frame. The facade surface is finished with a profile frame. The REAR FAÇADE is identical, except that instead of a door, a round arch-shaped window has been fitted, consisting of a 4-pane revolving window with a semicircular fanlight and closed with a Louvre shutter. The END FAÇADES are also identical. The facade treatment is similar to the front and rear facade, but due to the gable facade, the corner rails at the top merge into a climbing arch frieze. Furthermore, a 4-pane revolving window with a semicircular skylight and a Louvre shutter has been fitted in both the left and right side walls, in line with the rear facade. on the left side of the gauge house are 3 enamelled Gauge SCALES in a steel profile. The lowest scale is in the water in front of the dike slope, the middle one is at the bottom of the slope and the highest is at the top of the slope. In the INTERIOR there is a large brick well, on which the MEASURING INSTRUMENT is located. It is connected to the river arm via a tube at the bottom of the well, so that the water level in the middle of the river can be measured directly. The instrument consists of a mechanical part that reacts to the height of the water levels and a registration system that records the height of the water levels on a paper roll. Valuation: PEILHOUSE, located on the Waaldijk, built in 1874, with a MEASURING INSTRUMENT from 1926, and three OUTDOOR SCALES. - Of architectural-historical value because of the rarity of the building type, the architectural style and because of the soundness of the main shape and detailing. The gauge house is completely intact with a measuring instrument that still works perfectly, including the accompanying outer scales. - Of urban value as a striking part of the dike construction. - Of cultural-historical value as a significant element in the historical development of the region, especially in the field of water management.
