Begraafplaats Watersnoodramp 1953

Because both the newly constructed general cemetery and the Roman Catholic cemetery were flooded after the 1953 flood disaster and Oude-Tonge had more than 300 victims, a cemetery has been made in a sleeper dike. The victims were buried in a mass grave. Afterwards 160 stones were placed with 319 names of victims on them. At the front is the grave of Corporal Lodewijk van Polanen, who was hit by a helicopter rotor. After the disaster, the Catholic cemetery was made usable again and a new general cemetery was built outside the village. Also here is the memorial to the victims of Oude-Tonge.
