British soldier Field of honor Tilburg The plot is part of the 'Vrederust' General Cemetery, located on the Gilzerbaan in Tilburg. The plot in Tilburg is home to the graves of 76 fallen soldiers. Each grave has an identical white natural stone cast. Each emblem is embossed with an emblem of a bird with wings spread and a cross. To the left of the tombs is the 'Cross of Sacrifice', made from Portland natural stone. A bronze sword is placed on the cross. It is a standard cross of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, type A1 (for 40 to 250 graves). To the right of the plot is a rectangular stone monument with a bronze plaque. The memorial plaque shows a map of Western Europe in the center, with the troop movements of the Allies (from the invasion of Normandy to the Elbe and Berlin). The establishment of British honorary fields is uniform in all 140 countries where the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for the maintenance of the war graves. On each tombstone the name, year of birth, date of death, military unit, rank and nationality of the victim are stated. The text on the plaque is in both English and Dutch. The content is: "THIS PARK WAS CONSTRUCTED AND IS MAINTAINED BY COMMONWEALTH WARGRAVES COMMISSION. " Symbolism: The sacrificial cross symbolizes British soldiers who fell during the Second World War. The history In the period 1940-1945 the killed Allied soldiers were buried in the General Cemetery. After the war, large-scale burials followed. In 1950 the Imperial War Graves Commission requested permission to realize a permanent construction of the remaining Allied graves in the General Cemetery. The Municipal Executive provided the necessary land free of charge for this purpose. The British plot reminds the residents of Tilburg of 76 allied soldiers of the British Commonwealth who fell on Dutch territory during the Second World War. Of the soldiers killed, 1 was part of the naval forces, 40 were members of the army and 35 were members of the air force. The nationality of the victims is as follows: 53 from England; 7 from New Zealand; 5 from Canada; 1 from Australia; 10 with a different nationality (in particular Poland). The plot is under the protection of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In the Netherlands there are a total of 16 honorary fields of the British Commonwealth.
