Allardsoog is known for being the first Volkshogeschool in the Netherlands. An old medieval road runs over the heathland of Allardsoog. This hollow road was an important route from Friesland to Groningen / Drenthe from the Middle Ages. In addition, there are a number of Neolithic burial mounds on the heath. The Landweer, a late medieval fortification, is located on the border of Friesland and Drenthe. De Landweer was the first nature reserve that It Fryske Gea acquired.
