This bunker chapel is located at Lilbosch Abbey in Echt. In the Second World War, the Germans confiscated the Abbey and built this bunker next to the Abbey.
The bunker had facilities for about 200 people, such as showers, sleeping places and also a chapel for prayer. The German bunker can be visited.
The abbey was requisitioned by the Germans in 1942 and used as a shelter for various purposes (Orphanage, Bund Deutsche Mädel). Hence the need for sufficient shelter for several hundred people.
The bunker used to be close to and parallel to a building (the 'Gezellenhuis') that has since been demolished.
The bunker consists of four earthed semi-underground masonry vaults that are connected by a few short corridors. The entrances are protected by a 1.50 meter thick concrete cover.
Striking are the two centimeter thick (steel) doors that closed the various vaults and exits. At the end of each hall are two toilet areas. There was a collapsed hallway that presumably led to the demolished building.
It concerns a 'Luftschutzbunker', which had no other military functions. These bunkers were built by the civil Siedlung und Bauten and were also found at Baarn and Sterksel (roof demolished). Similar structures are available in Germany.
Impressive and depressing. In 1942, the bunker for 200 people was built under the monastery garden with facilities for sleeping, showering and the prayer chapel.
