About the area You'll find 't Hout in the middle of Limburg. A varied deciduous forest with poplars, summer oaks and ash trees. Enjoy blooming forest anemones in the spring while hiking through a forest covered with a bottom. During the fall, the fire milk fungus rears its head. Death brings life The cycle in nature provides a nice balance between animal and plant life. That is why we ring some poplars in 't Hout. The bark is then removed from around the trunk, causing the tree to slowly die. This way more dead wood ends up in the forest. That is good for the arrival and growth of other flora and fauna. Dead poplars, for example, make an ideal habitat for woodpeckers. Frogs and salamanders A brook meanders on the western edge of the forest. Amphibians, such as the brown frog, the lesser newt and the great crested newt, live near that stream. Mowing instead of grazing Natuurmonumenten often puts cattle and sheep for grazing in an area. We stopped doing this in 't Hout and started mowing ourselves, in order to shrink the soil even faster. Source: Natuurmonumenten.nl
